About French

With over 80 million native French speakers across the globe, French is one of the world’s most beloved languages. It is the official language in 29 countries, including France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Mali and Senegal. A “romance” language originating from Latin, there are various dialects, most notably between Canadian French and Parisian French. Along with English, French remains an influential language in the diplomatic world, highlighting the importance of receiving certified and qualified French translation services. Let Languages in Motion bring you to the forefront of the French-speaking world with our translators and interpreters.

History of the Language

French is one of the world’s most influential languages and is considered one of the most favourite romantic languages. Deriving from Latin, the language is closely related to Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Romanian. With the colonial expansion of France, the language spread to Africa, including the likes of Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt, and North America, including Ottawa, Canada, certain parts of the states, and the Caribbean Islands. In 1634, Cardinal Richelieu, the chief minister to King Louis XIII, founded the Académie Française (the French Academy) to preserve and police the French language. It remains to this day.

While there are many differences between the two languages, here’s what makes Canadian French different from regular French: the pronunciation of words, grammatical and vocabulary differences, and most significantly, that Canadian French uses more “Anglicisms” – words or phrases taken from the English language.

Definitely! As French is one of the country’s official languages, a great number of people speak it. While Quebec is the dominant French-speaking province of Canada, you will find Francophone communities across the country, from Ottawa to Nunavut. We can help with translating or interpreting French across the country.

Yes, it can! It has origins in Latin, thus making it easily translated to Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and English. Our translators can also translate many other French language combinations, such as English, Arabic and Romanian
