About Korean

Korean is the official language of South Korea (Republic of Korea) and North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea). The Korean language is spoken by more than 75 million of native speakers of Korea. It is also spoken in China, Canada, the United States and Japan. The Korean and Japanese languages are closer to each other than they are to any other languages. It belongs to the Paleosiberian family, a group of ancient languages in Northeast Asia; but it remains a controversial topic. At Languages in Motion, we can support your communication to Korean communities across the globe with our translation and interpreter services.

History of the Language

Chinese characters arrived in Korea together with Buddhism during the pre-Three Kingdoms period. There are about seven different dialects of the Korean language. It was originally written using Chinese characters known today as “Hanja”, which was designed to either aid in reading Hanja or replace Hanja entirely. Nowadays, Korean is mainly spelled in the Korean alphabet, the “Hangul”, which consist of 24 letters, 14 consonants and 10 vowels. The alphabet is written between two to five characters.

Although Korean consists of native Korean words (it is an original language), a lot of the current vocabulary has been borrowed from Mandarin (Chinese). Therefore, having a grasp of Mandarin can prove useful when translating or communicating in Korean.
Similar to Japanese, Koreans use honorifics, which means verbs and vocabulary will be altered depending on the relationships between the speakers. For example, you would use honorifics when speaking to your parents, grandparents, people older than you or have a higher status. There is, of course, a neutral speech level which is used in general situations.
Since the Korean War in the 1950s, and the subsequent 70 years, South–North differences have developed in Standard Korean language, including variations in pronunciation and vocabulary chosen. However, these minor differences can be found in any of the Korean dialects and are still largely mutually intelligible.
